Common Problems with the
2000 Subaru Outback Mk2 (BH)

The 2.5L EJ25 engine often develops external oil and coolant leaks from the head gaskets, or internal leaks leading to overheating. Fault reports and UK MOT data both record engine oil/coolant leaks and exhaust leaks as recurring issues on this generation.

A common failure on this generation, often starting as a faint drone that many owners ignore until it becomes a roar. Suspension and wheel-bearing faults are a regularly recorded MOT area on the BH Outback.

Knocks and clunks from the front end over bumps and on full-lock turns are commonly traced to worn strut top mounts or suspension bushes. Suspension is the second most common MOT failure area on the Outback, so front-end knocks should be taken seriously on a viewing.

The BH Outback's exhaust system rusts under UK winter salt, producing loud blowing or rattling noises and a potential MOT failure on exhaust, emissions and leaks. This is a recorded failure area on the Outback and becomes more likely as mileage builds.
