2001 Ferrari 512 4.9L Petrol · J938 MHR

The vehicle’s most recent MOT test on 2025-10-23 resulted in a pass with no recorded defects, following an immediate retest on 2025-10-22 that also failed—though without specific faults logged. This suggests the vehicle passed its primary checks, but the absence of any defects in either test means critical components like brakes, suspension, and emissions were deemed compliant at the time. The lack of advisories or recurring issues in the MOT history indicates no obvious mechanical trends, though the failure on the first attempt without explanation is unusual and may warrant scrutiny of whether the test was comprehensive or if minor oversights were overlooked. The test date is just under a year old, which is acceptable for a low-mileage classic, but the vehicle’s age demands closer inspection of wear items that MOTs do not always catch. The recorded mileage of 3,948 miles over approximately 25 years—roughly 158 miles annually—is exceptionally low for a vehicle of this age, suggesting it has spent most of its life either stored or used infrequently. The gap between the 2025 tests (a single day apart) is unusual and may indicate a scheduling anomaly rather than a pattern, but the overall lack of mileage accumulation means consumables like brake pads, tyres, and fluids have likely seen minimal wear. This could also imply long periods without regular maintenance, potentially allowing corrosion or dry-rotting of rubber components to develop. The low mileage does not necessarily negate structural concerns, however, as even classic vehicles can suffer from neglect-related issues like seized joints or degraded seals. Given the sparse MOT record, an in-person inspection should prioritise components that are not routinely tested but are critical for a vehicle of this age and condition. Focus on the suspension—particularly coil springs, bushes, and dampers—for signs of dry rot or corrosion, as these are often overlooked in low-mileage cars. The brakes should be checked for uneven wear or binding calipers, even though the MOT passed, as Ferrari braking systems can develop hidden issues over time. Examine the engine bay for fluid leaks, degraded hoses, and corrosion around the battery and electrical connections, while the underbody should be inspected for rust penetration in critical areas like the subframe or exhaust mounts. The lack of advisories in the MOT history does not guarantee these areas are sound, so a thorough visual and functional assessment is essential.
