1997 Subaru Legacy 2.2L Petrol · P371 FGM

The 1997 Subaru Legacy’s most recent MOT test on 2022-01-24 resulted in a clean pass with no recorded defects, indicating a stable roadworthiness status at that point. However, the absence of any subsequent tests—given the vehicle’s age and mileage—raises immediate concerns. The gap of nearly four years between tests is well beyond the standard 12-month interval, and without further data, there is no evidence of proactive maintenance or early fault detection. This prolonged period without verification means critical components like suspension bushes, coil springs, and brake calipers could have degraded significantly, particularly given the vehicle’s age and the potential for corrosion in its exposed structural elements. The recorded mileage of 109,043 miles over approximately 29 years suggests unusually light usage, averaging around 3,760 miles annually. While low mileage can imply less wear on high-stress parts, it also indicates prolonged periods of inactivity, which accelerates deterioration in rubber seals, suspension components, and battery health. The lack of intermediate MOTs or service records means there is no way to confirm whether the vehicle was stored properly or driven regularly enough to prevent stagnation-related issues. Without additional context, the low mileage does not outweigh the risk of deferred maintenance, especially in a vehicle of this vintage where corrosion and fluid leaks are common concerns. Given the sparse MOT history, a buyer should prioritise a thorough inspection of the suspension system, particularly the rear subframe and bushings, which are prone to failure in older Subarus. The brakes, including rear binding calipers and warped discs, should be checked for uneven wear or excessive noise, as these are often overlooked until they become serious safety hazards. Structural corrosion—especially around the wheel arches, sills, and subframe mounts—must be examined closely, as this is a silent killer in vehicles of this age. Additionally, the exhaust system should be inspected for leaks or rust-through, which could affect emissions and structural integrity. The lack of recent testing means no assurance exists that these areas remain sound.
