2000 Mercedes-Benz SL 3.2L Petrol · W257 LNC

This Mercedes-Benz SL from 2000 has maintained a consistent MOT pass record across the last three tests, with no defects or advisories recorded in June 2024, June 2023, or June 2022. The most recent test, just over two years ago, confirms the vehicle remains roadworthy under current DVSA standards, though it is now significantly overdue for its next mandatory inspection. The absence of recurring issues suggests the car has been kept in a stable condition, though the lack of advisories does not preclude hidden wear—particularly in high-mileage components like suspension bushes, coil springs, or brake calipers, which often fail without prior warning. The recorded mileage of 103,813 miles over 26 years equates to approximately 3,993 miles annually, a figure well below average for a vehicle of this age. This low usage implies minimal stress on the drivetrain, but it also raises questions about long-term neglect. The most recent MOT was conducted in June 2024, meaning the vehicle has been driven for over two years without inspection—a period where critical components like brake pads, tyres, and suspension elements could degrade without detection. The gap between tests is particularly notable given the car’s age, as older vehicles are more prone to latent failures in systems like the exhaust emissions control or electrical wiring. Given the sparse MOT history, a prospective buyer should prioritise an independent inspection of suspension integrity, focusing on worn or cracked bushes and coil springs, which are common failure points in high-end luxury vehicles of this era. The brakes, though not flagged in past tests, warrant scrutiny for uneven wear or binding calipers, especially if the vehicle has been stationary for extended periods. Corrosion in the subframe or sills—often exacerbated by low mileage and prolonged exposure—should also be examined, as should the condition of the exhaust system for leaks or structural weakness. The absence of advisories does not guarantee these areas are sound, and a thorough mechanical assessment remains essential.
