1983 Volkswagen Golf 1.8L Petrol · A590 VML

The most recent MOT, dated 20 July 2023, was a clean PASS with no recorded defects at 20,519 mi. This suggests that, at least at the time of the test, the car met the basic safety and emissions standards. The only recurring problem evident in the history is extensive corrosion on the brake pipe system and related brake‑related wear. In 2006 the vehicle failed with multiple brake‑pipe sections described as “excessively corroded”, a split steering‑rack gaiter, a badly scored front brake disc, thin front pads and a rear wheel bearing with excessive play. By 2010 the only noted issue was a “slightly corroded” near‑side rear brake pipe, and by 2023 no defects were recorded. This pattern indicates that the major corrosion and wear items were addressed between 2006 and 2010, and the condition appears to have stabilised or improved since then. Mileage is unusually low for a 43‑year‑old car – roughly 477 mi per year. Such a low figure could mean the car has spent long periods unused, which can promote rust and seal deterioration, or it could reflect a simple recording error (the 2006 mileage of 230,714 mi and the 2010 mileage of 23,800 mi are inconsistent). Because the mileage signal is ambiguous, it is prudent not to assume the car has been lightly used; instead, treat the low figure as a possible indicator of long storage periods. Overall, the MOT trend moves from a heavily corroded, worn‑out state in 2006 to a clean pass in 2023, suggesting that the most serious safety‑related issues have been remedied.
