2017 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2L Diesel · AS14 LMS

The Vauxhall Corsa’s most recent MOT test on 2026-06-17 resulted in a clean pass, marking a significant improvement over its previous test on 2026-06-13, which failed due to two major defects: an incorrectly aimed near-side headlamp beam and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) emitting visible exhaust smoke. While the 2025-06-21 MOT also passed without issues, the presence of a single failed test within the past year suggests a maintenance pattern that warrants cautious optimism. The failure on 2026-06-13 indicates either a recent or unresolved issue with the exhaust system, particularly the DPF, which could point to either a mechanical blockage or a more fundamental problem with the engine’s emissions control strategy. The headlamp issue, while not directly roadworthy, is easily rectifiable and unlikely to affect safety. For a buyer, this history implies that while the vehicle has been maintained adequately in the past, there is room for improvement in addressing the exhaust-related defect before it resurfaces, especially if the Corsa is diesel. The vehicle’s recorded mileage of 91,411 miles over nine years represents a moderate annual usage rate of approximately 10,157 miles per annum, which is within the expected range for a Corsa of this age and class. This level of mileage does not necessarily indicate excessive wear, but it does suggest that the vehicle has been driven regularly rather than left stationary for prolonged periods. However, the absence of a service history or mileage stamps in the MOT records could imply that the owner has not kept detailed maintenance logs, which is common in some used-car markets. Without service records, it is prudent to assume that consumables such as brake pads, suspension components, and fluid levels may have been replaced at varying intervals, potentially leading to uneven wear. For example, if the DPF-related issue persists or recurs, it could signal deeper problems with the engine’s cooling or fuel system, which may not be immediately apparent but could escalate with continued use. Given the recent MOT failure on 2026-06-13, the most critical inspection for the buyer should focus on the exhaust system, particularly the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and associated components. On a test drive, listen for unusual noises from the exhaust, such as rattling or clanking, which could indicate loose or damaged components. Check for excessive smoke from the tailpipe, especially when accelerating, as this may suggest a blockage or failure in the DPF or catalytic converter. Visually inspect the exhaust manifold and DPF housing for signs of corrosion or damage, and ensure there are no visible leaks from the exhaust system. If the DPF is suspected of being blocked or failing, the vehicle may experience reduced power, increased fuel consumption, or a check engine light activation. Additionally, the headlamp aim should be verified to ensure the beam is correctly aligned, which can be done using a simple beam test kit or by consulting the manufacturer’s specifications. For the Vauxhall Corsa’s age and mileage, the buyer should also conduct a thorough physical inspection of the vehicle’s structural and mechanical components. Check the tyres for signs of sidewall perishing, which is more likely to occur with age than mileage, particularly if the Corsa has been stationary for extended periods. Inspect the wheel bearings for excessive play or grinding noises when turning, and listen for clunking sounds from the suspension, which could indicate worn suspension bushes or damaged coil springs. The brakes should be tested for binding calipers, uneven wear, or a shuddering sensation when braking, which may signal warped discs or contaminated brake fluid. Finally, given the vehicle’s age, the 12V battery should be tested for strength, and the engine’s fluids—oil, coolant, and transmission fluid—should be checked for degradation or contamination. If the Corsa has been driven at lower mileage, it is also advisable to verify that the service book has been stamped correctly, as some manufacturers recommend fluid changes at specific intervals regardless of mileage.
