2003 MG ZS 1.8L Petrol · AV53 SWK

The vehicle most recently passed its MOT on 29 October 2025 with no defects recorded. Looking at the history since 2023, the maintenance trend appears exceptionally stable. While there were two recorded failures in 2023 and 2024, these were rectified promptly and the absence of listed defects suggests that any issues were minor or administrative in nature. The consistent lack of advisories over the last three years indicates a vehicle that is being kept in a roadworthy condition without a pattern of recurring mechanical failure. With a recorded mileage of 91,340 miles over a twenty-three year period, this MG ZS has averaged approximately 3,971 miles per year. This is considerably lower than the national average for a vehicle of this vintage. While low mileage generally implies less wear on the internal combustion components and the drivetrain, it often suggests periods of prolonged inactivity. Such usage patterns can be as detrimental as high mileage, as rubber components can perish and fluids can degrade due to time rather than distance. Given the clean MOT record and low annual usage, the physical inspection should focus on age-related degradation rather than wear and tear. You must carefully examine the tyre sidewalls for fine cracking or perishing, as tyres often expire chronologically before the tread wears down. Check the brake discs for heavy surface corrosion or signs of binding calipers, which occur when a vehicle stands for extended periods. During the test drive, listen for knocks or clunks from the suspension, as the rubber suspension bushes and coil springs can harden and crack over two decades regardless of the mileage. Finally, verify the service history to ensure that fluids have been changed based on a calendar interval rather than just mileage. Engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid degrade over time and can lead to internal corrosion or reduced braking efficiency if neglected. Inspect the 12V battery for signs of leakage or age, as low-use vehicles often suffer from premature battery failure. A thorough check of the underbody for structural corrosion is also essential, as the MG ZS platform can be susceptible to rust in areas that are not always highlighted during a standard MOT test.
