2005 BMW X5 3.0L Diesel · AY05 LXW

The BMW X5 presents a stable roadworthiness record over the past three years, with the most recent MOT in November 2025 at 237,400 miles passing without any defects. This consistency extends back to July 2024 and August 2023, where tests also cleared with no advisories or failures—save for a single anomaly in July 2023, where the vehicle failed despite no recorded defects. Such an isolated incident is unusual and may warrant further investigation, particularly if the failure was administrative rather than mechanical. The absence of recurring advisories or major defects in recent tests suggests the vehicle has been maintained to meet minimum legal standards, though this does not preclude hidden wear or deferred repairs. Mileage accumulation aligns closely with typical usage for a vehicle of this age, averaging around 11,300 miles annually. The gap between the July 2023 failure and the subsequent August 2023 pass—spanning just six days and a mere 6-mile increase—is highly irregular and raises questions about the validity of that test outcome. Beyond that, the mileage progression is steady, with no sudden spikes or prolonged periods of inactivity that might indicate neglect or infrequent use. The most recent MOT, just eight months ago, confirms the car remains compliant under current regulations, though the lack of advisories does not guarantee long-term reliability beyond basic roadworthiness. For a prospective buyer, the primary focus should be on components not covered by the MOT, particularly the suspension system, which in a 21-year-old SUV is prone to wear in bushes, coil springs, and ball joints. The absence of brake-related advisories in recent tests is positive, but binding calipers or uneven disc wear could still be present. Structural integrity should also be scrutinised, as corrosion in high-stress areas—such as wheel arches, sills, or subframe mounts—often develops gradually and may not be visible from the outside. Finally, while the MOT history shows no exhaust emissions failures, a visual and auditory check for leaks or excessive backpressure is advisable, given the age of the vehicle.
