The power steering system on the Mk4 Mondeo features a fine plastic mesh filter integral to the base of the fluid reservoir. Over time, fluid breakdown and particulate contamination clog this non-serviceable mesh, starving the power steering pump of fluid. The resulting hydraulic cavitation causes loud groaning and whining noises when turning the wheel, creates air bubbles in the reservoir, and quickly overheats the pump. If ignored, the starving pump sheds metal debris, contaminating and ruining the entire steering rack.

The electrical wiring loom connecting the vehicle body to the tailgate passes through a flexible rubber bellows conduit at the top hinge area. Constant flexing and sub-zero winter temperatures harden the thin PVC insulation on the wiring. The copper conductors fatigue and fracture cleanly inside the rubber sleeve, causing individual tailgate electrical circuits to fail intermittently or drop out completely. In some cases, exposed wires short-circuit together, blowing fuses and disabling central locking.

The 1.8 TDCi (Lynx) engine used on earlier Mk4 Mondeos features a dual timing setup: an upper dry camshaft belt and a lower 'belt-in-oil' cassette driving the high-pressure fuel pump from the crankshaft. Diesel fuel dilution from short journeys and incorrect engine oil degrade the rubber compound of the wet belt. The belt teeth strip or the belt snaps without prior warning, often well before Ford's stated 125,000-mile interval, causing catastrophic piston-to-valve collision and total engine destruction.
