1986 Volkswagen Transporter 1.9L Petrol · C226 PNV

A recurring concern around rear body integrity and minor electrical items defines the mechanical narrative of this 1986 Volkswagen Transporter, though its overall roadworthiness trajectory has remained stable rather than deteriorating. The most recent test on 14 October 2025 recorded a pass with no advisories, following a fail on the same date for a nearside rear position lamp not functioning, a straightforward lighting defect. The same pattern appeared at the previous test in October 2024, where a pass was recorded alongside an offside rear position lamp failure, again a simple lamp replacement. These identical electrical issues across consecutive years are worth investigating to ensure the bulb holders, earth points, and rear loom are not suffering from corrosion at the connector interface, which is common on a vehicle of this vintage. More significantly, the 2023 test flagged advisories on both rear wheel arch areas for corrosion to the integral body structure that was not yet compromising rigidity, alongside slight play in the offside rear wheel bearing, suggesting these structural and running gear items warrant close physical inspection. The recorded mileage of 60,364 miles over approximately forty years equates to an average annual accumulation of around 1,509 miles, which is exceptionally low and points to extended periods of standing or only occasional use. This type of usage pattern typically accelerates deterioration of rubber components, seals, and fluid systems rather than causing wear from high mileage, so the mechanical concerns tend to be age-related rather than distance-related. There are no notable gaps in testing or recorded mileage jumps to suggest any anomaly, and the consistency of low usage aligns with the absence of any wear-based advisories on suspension, brakes, or drivetrain components. The single 2023 advisory on rear wheel bearing play combined with the structural corrosion advisories fits a profile of a vehicle that has been parked for substantial periods, allowing moisture ingress and oxidation rather than mechanical fatigue to dictate the condition. For a prospective buyer, the immediate priority is a thorough physical examination of the rear wheel arches and the load-bearing structure behind them, since the 2023 advisories noted corrosion on both sides. Corrosion described as not significantly reducing structural rigidity at the last assessment can advance considerably between tests, particularly on a vehicle of this age, so feel inside the arch lips, along the inner sills, and check the rear chassis outriggers for any perforation or underseal bubbling that may have developed since the 2023 inspection. The rear wheel bearing play should be rechecked by jacking the wheel and rocking it to confirm whether the slight movement has progressed into a more pronounced looseness, which would manifest on test as a rumbling noise that increases with cornering loads. A test drive should include slow-speed manoeuvres and tight turns to detect any clunking or wandering from the rear, and the rear lighting circuits should be visually inspected for corroded earth straps behind the lamp clusters, as the repeated lamp failures on opposite sides in successive years could indicate a common earthing fault rather than two isolated bulb failures. Beyond the specific MOT findings, particular attention should be paid to the fuel and braking systems, as a forty-year-old vehicle with low annual mileage is vulnerable to perished flexible brake hoses, internal corrosion in fuel lines, and dried-out rubber components. On the test drive, listen for any knocking or rattling from the rear suspension over uneven surfaces, which would suggest deteriorated bushes or shock absorbers, and check for any pulling to one side under braking that might indicate a binding caliper. With the engine at operating temperature, watch the exhaust for excessive smoke and inspect the underbody for oil leaks from the notoriously hard-working VW flat-four unit, paying particular attention to the rear main seal and crankcase joints. Finally, given the very low annual mileage, request evidence of recent replacement of the coolant, brake fluid, and drive belts, as these items degrade with calendar age rather than mileage and are commonly overlooked on vehicles that see limited use.
