1985 Opel Manta 2.0L Petrol · C788 AAE

The most recent MOT on 17 July 2026 was passed with no recorded defects, and the two preceding tests in 2025 and 2024 also returned clean passes. This uninterrupted sequence of defect‑free results suggests a stable maintenance pattern; there is no evidence of a deteriorating condition or of recurring failures that would indicate emerging problems. The consistency of the passes over three consecutive years points to a vehicle that has either been well looked after or has been used sparingly enough to avoid the wear that typically triggers MOT advisories. At 30,338 miles the Manta has logged an average of roughly 740 miles per annum over its 41‑year life. Such a low annual utilisation is far below the normal wear‑rate for a car of this vintage and usually reflects either very light use or prolonged periods of storage. The modest mileage means that many wear items – for example clutch plates, timing belt or chain, and major engine components – are likely to have more life remaining than the calendar age alone would suggest. However, the converse is that components susceptible to ageing rather than use, such as rubber seals, hoses, and tyre sidewalls, may have deteriorated despite the low mileage. When inspecting a vehicle of this age with limited use, the buyer should give particular attention to tyre condition; even with few miles, the rubber can harden, develop sidewall cracks, or suffer from dry‑rot, especially if the car has been stored in a damp environment. Examine the tread depth and look for any uneven wear that could hint at mis‑aligned suspension geometry. Check the 12‑volt battery for sulphation and verify that it holds charge, as long periods of inactivity often lead to reduced cranking power and eventual failure. All fluid reservoirs – engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and power‑steering fluid – should be inspected for colour, clarity and level, and it is advisable to replace them on a calendar basis even if the mileage is low, because fluids can absorb moisture and lose their protective properties over time. Further mechanical checks should include the condition of suspension bushes, ball joints and coil springs; rubber bushings can become brittle and cause clunking noises over bumps, while corroded mounting points may affect handling. The braking system warrants a thorough examination: look for rust on the discs, especially if the car has been stationary for months, and ensure the calipers move freely without binding. Inspect the exhaust system for rust perforations or cracked mounts, as corrosion can progress rapidly on older steelwork. Finally, request any service book entries or receipts that confirm regular oil changes, timing belt/chain replacement (if applicable) and any major overhauls; a well‑documented service history will give added confidence that the Manta’s age‑related wear has been managed appropriately.
