The most recent MOT test passed on 20 February 2025. The overall maintenance trend indicates a vehicle that is being maintained to a functional standard but suffers from persistent, minor issues rather than a complete mechanical overhaul. Specifically, an oil leak has been an ongoing advisory since at least 2021, suggesting a slow seepage that has not been fully resolved. While the brake pipe corrosion and wheel bearing issues noted in previous years appear to have been addressed or monitored, the recurrence of the oil leak means the engine's sealing integrity remains a point of ongoing concern. With a recorded mileage of 82,536 over 41 years, the vehicle averages roughly 2,013 miles per year. This is very low usage for a car of this age, which typically implies the vehicle is used for occasional leisure trips or has spent significant periods stationary. While low mileage generally means less wear on the engine and gearbox, it presents specific risks related to age-related degradation. Components that rely on regular movement to stay lubricated or clear of debris, such as seals, bearings, and braking components, are more prone to failure due to inactivity. During your inspection and test drive, pay close attention to the recurring oil leak. Look for fresh oil pooling under the engine or weeping from gaskets such as the sump or rocker cover. On the road, listen for any unusual engine noises or changes in oil pressure indicators. Although the rear wheel bearings were previously noted for having slight play, you should listen for any humming, grinding, or droning noises coming from the rear wheels at varying speeds, which would indicate that the bearings are beginning to fail again. Furthermore, ensure the brake pedal feels firm and consistent, as the previous history of corroded brake pipes necessitates a check for any signs of fluid leaks or spongy pedal response. Because of the low annual mileage and the vehicle's age, you must conduct a thorough visual inspection of all rubber components. Check the tyres for sidewall cracking or perishing, as age-related dry rot can cause sudden failure even with plenty of tread remaining. Inspect suspension bushes, fuel lines, and coolant hoses for signs of hardening or splitting. Given the likely periods of standing, check the brake discs for heavy corrosion and the calipers for signs of binding, which can cause pulling or uneven braking. Finally, verify that the service history includes calendar-based fluid changes, as brake fluid, coolant, and oil can degrade chemically over time regardless of how few miles the car has covered.
