2011 Vauxhall Astra 2.0L Diesel · CF11 DHO

The most recent MOT, carried out on 11 September 2024, was passed but recorded an advisory that the nearside front tyre is worn close to the legal limit and shows edge wear. Apart from that, the test showed no failures or mandatory defects. Looking back through the eight‑year record, the vehicle suffered a dangerous tyre failure in December 2018, after which the subsequent three years have been free of serious defects, with only minor advisories recorded in 2019 (brake disc wear) and the latest tyre advisory. This pattern indicates that the car’s maintenance has stabilised and is now improving, assuming the owner has addressed the tyre issues that prompted the 2018 failure. With a recorded 148,157 miles on a 2011 model, the average annual mileage works out at just under 10,000 miles per year, which is typical for a vehicle of this age. There are no obvious large gaps in the recorded mileage, suggesting the car has been used consistently rather than sitting idle for long periods. The mileage level means that consumables such as tyres, brake discs, suspension bushings and engine oil will have experienced normal wear, and any components approaching the end of their service life should be inspected closely. Prospective buyers should give particular attention to the front tyre condition. The advisory about edge wear implies the tread may be uneven, often a sign of mis‑aligned wheels, worn suspension bushes or incorrect tyre pressures. During a test drive listen for a hollow thump or vibration when the steering is held steady, and feel for any pulling to one side. Verify that the tyre tread depth exceeds 1.6 mm on all four corners and that the sidewalls show no cracking, bulges or exposed cords. The 2019 advisories about front and rear brake discs being pitted or scored, though not yet critically thin, suggest the discs are approaching the point where resurfacing or replacement may be required. Measure the disc thickness against the manufacturer’s minimum specification and check for brake pedal pulsation, squeal or shudder under moderate braking, which would indicate uneven wear or glazing. Given the car is now fifteen years old, time‑related degradation must also be examined. Inspect the tyre sidewalls for dry rot, especially if the vehicle has spent long periods stationary, and confirm that the 12 V battery terminals are clean and the charge holds under load. Examine the suspension components for any play in the ball joints, worn rubber bushings or leaking shock absorbers, as mileage in the high‑hundreds of thousands can accelerate corrosion. Check that the engine oil, coolant and brake fluid have been changed within the recommended intervals – fluid can become contaminated or lose its protective properties even when the car is not driven heavily. Finally, review the service book for evidence of regular oil changes, timing belt or chain service (if applicable), and any recorded replacement of wear items such as tyres, brake pads or suspension parts, to ensure the vehicle has been looked after in line with its age and mileage.
