The Renault-Nissan 2.3 dCi (YS23DDT single-turbo and YS23DDTT twin-turbo) diesel engine can experience premature turbocharger bearing wear and oil-seal failure. This is exacerbated by extended oil change intervals (up to 18,000 miles or 2 years under factory schedules), oil dilution from interrupted DPF regenerations, or heavy towing duties. As bearing play increases, the impeller blades contact the housing, generating a high-pitched siren whistle and passing oil into the intake, risking limp mode or diesel runaway.

Euro 6 versions of the 2.3 dCi fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) frequently suffer from AdBlue dosing errors, crystallisation of urea around the dosing injector, and inaccurate tank level readings. In the UK, DVSA recall campaign R/2023/194 was launched to update the AdBlue Dosing Control Module software to increase online dosing efficiency across 28,292 Nissan vehicles built between May 2016 and May 2019. Unresolved software glitches or clogged injectors trigger an engine restart countdown that immobilises the vehicle once expired.

The factory flexible turbo hot pipe and intercooler induction hoses on the 2.3 dCi engine undergo intense thermal expansion and boost cycling (peaking over 2 bar on twin-turbo models). Over time, the factory rubber and moulded plastic pipes soften, develop oil seepage past their O-ring joins, or split along longitudinal mould seams. A cracked boost pipe causes immediate boost loss, distinctive air hiss under acceleration, heavy black exhaust smoke, and DPF soot overloading.
