1988 Vauxhall Nova 1.0L Petrol · F193 CAW

Structural corrosion and suspension integrity dominate the mechanical story of this 1988 Vauxhall Nova. The 2019 test produced a fail with major defects centred on excessively corroded suspension mounting points within the prescribed areas, including both front inner wheel arch and floor sections near the lower arm mounts, as well as both rear outer sills. The accompanying advisory noted similar but less severe corrosion on the rear inner sills, and the 2017 pass had already recorded corroded rear coil springs on both sides. Since the 2019 failure, three subsequent tests in 2020, 2021, and 2022 all passed with no defects recorded, and the most recent test on 13 January 2024 also returned a clean pass with no advisories or failures logged. A buyer should still treat the 2019 corrosion findings as the defining issue, as MOT advisories and structural deterioration are not necessarily revisited unless specifically re-examined, and the absence of a recent corrosion advisory does not confirm that the earlier repairs, if any, remain fully sound. The recorded mileage of 93,256 across the MOT history represents an annual accumulation of roughly 2,454 miles, which is markedly low for a 38-year-old vehicle and consistent with long periods off the road or very limited seasonal use. Testing cadence shows gaps, with the 2018 and 2017 entries indicating active use in those years, but the steady low annual figure combined with the age suggests the Nova has spent considerable time stationary. Extended standing periods on older vehicles of this vintage commonly accelerate corrosion in box sections, sills, and suspension pick-up areas through trapped moisture and lack of protective use, which aligns with the chassis-related defects recorded in 2017 and 2019. Low recorded mileage does not equate to preserved mechanical condition, particularly on a vehicle where structural integrity has already been formally flagged as significantly reduced on inner wheel arches, floors, and outer sills. For a prospective buyer, the priority must be a thorough physical examination of the areas previously flagged, since MOT testing only assesses visible and accessible components and corrosion can progress behind covers or filler. The front inner wheel arches, the floor pan within 30 cm of the lower arm mounting points, and both rear outer sills require close inspection for penetrating rust, repair patches, or fresh underseal applied over active corrosion. The rear inner sills, noted as corroded but not excessive in 2019, warrant checking for progression. The rear coil springs should be examined for surface corrosion and any signs of fatigue cracking, as corroded springs can fail suddenly under load. The suspension itself should be inspected for play in the lower arm mountings, knocking from the front suspension over uneven surfaces, and any visible cracking or deformation where the arms attach to the body. Brake system verification is equally important given the 2019 failure for an excessively binding offside rear service brake. On a test drive, listen for any dragging sensation, uneven deceleration, or hot-smell from the rear wheel area after use, which would indicate a sticking caliper or seized handbrake mechanism. The front offside headlamp area should be checked for secure mounting and correct beam pattern, as two separate defects were recorded here in 2018 relating to insecure fixing and incorrect aim. The nearside front direction indicator mount should be confirmed as solid, and the offside rear fog lamp lens inspected for cracking. The fuel filler cap seal, flagged as cracking in both 2018 and 2019, is a minor but recurring item worth replacing. Given the vehicle's age and recorded structural corrosion history, a pre-purchase inspection on a lift by a technician familiar with classic Vauxhall models is strongly advisable before committing to purchase.
