1988 Mercedes 420 4.2L Petrol · F208 RMK

The vehicle most recently passed its MOT on 23 July 2025 with no defects or advisories recorded. This represents a significant improvement over the earlier history, which was characterised by recurring failures and advisories. Between 2014 and 2018, the vehicle suffered from persistent oil leaks, steering play, and brake pipe corrosion. The current clean bill of health suggests either a period of comprehensive restoration or a high standard of recent maintenance, although the substantial gap in testing between 2018 and 2025 warrants further investigation into the vehicle's activity and storage conditions during that interval. With a recorded mileage of 131,293 miles over nearly 38 years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 3,455 miles per year. This is considerably low for a Mercedes-Benz of this era, indicating that the car has likely served as a secondary vehicle or has spent extended periods in storage. While low mileage reduces mechanical wear on the drivetrain and interior, it introduces risks associated with stagnation. Long periods of inactivity can lead to the perishing of rubber components, the degradation of essential fluids, and the potential for brake calipers to bind or discs to suffer from heavy surface corrosion. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the historical mentions of brake pipe corrosion and oil leaks. While the latest test is clean, you must physically inspect the brake lines for evidence of replacement or the use of protective coatings to mask oxidation. During the test drive, listen for any clunks or knocks from the front suspension and feel for vagueness or excessive free play in the steering wheel, which were noted in previous years. Check the engine bay and the underside of the chassis for any signs of active oil seepage, particularly around the gaskets and seals, as these often harden and leak after long periods of standing. Given the low annual usage and the age of the vehicle, a thorough inspection of all rubber consumables is essential. Check the tyre sidewalls for fine cracking or perishing, as tyres can become unsafe due to age even if the tread depth remains legal. Verify the health of the 12V battery and ensure that the braking system does not feel spongy or exhibit shudder, which would indicate moisture contamination in the brake fluid or pitted discs. Finally, request the service history to confirm that oil and filter changes have been performed based on a calendar interval rather than mileage alone, as aged oil loses its lubricating properties and can lead to premature engine wear.
