2018 Volkswagen Sharan 2.0L Diesel · FB18 BGE

The Volkswagen Sharan’s MOT history presents an unusual but ultimately reassuring picture of roadworthiness, with the vehicle passing its most recent test in September 2025 at 63,289 miles after a single, unexplained failure two days prior. The back-to-back tests—one pass, one fail—with no recorded defects on either occasion suggest a procedural anomaly rather than a mechanical issue, given the absence of advisories or failures tied to specific components. This pattern indicates a stable structural and mechanical condition, with no evidence of recurring faults or deteriorating systems over the past three years. The fact that the car cleared its final MOT without defects implies that any underlying concerns—had they existed—were addressed promptly, though the lack of detail on the failed test leaves a minor uncertainty. Mileage accumulation aligns closely with typical usage for an eight-year-old vehicle, averaging around 7,911 miles annually, which is neither excessively high nor suspiciously low. The gaps between tests are consistent, with each MOT falling roughly 12 months apart, and mileage increments reflect steady, moderate driving rather than prolonged storage or aggressive use. The most recent 7,164-mile jump between September 2024 and September 2025 is unremarkable, reinforcing the impression of regular, unexceptional service. There are no red flags in the mileage pattern to suggest neglect or abuse, though the absence of advisories or defects in earlier tests does not preclude the need for a thorough pre-purchase inspection. For a prospective buyer, the primary focus should be on components not covered by the MOT but critical to long-term reliability. Given the clean history, attention should turn to the suspension—specifically the condition of coil springs, anti-roll bars, and bushings—since these wear items are not routinely tested but can degrade without obvious symptoms. The braking system, including caliper condition, brake fluid age, and disc thickness, should be checked, even though the MOT record shows no brake-related failures. Structural integrity, particularly around wheel arches and underbody panels, warrants inspection for early corrosion, as the Sharan’s bodywork is susceptible to rust in high-moisture environments. Finally, while the MOT history is flawless, a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic would confirm the health of the drivetrain, including differential fluid condition and CV joint wear, which are not part of the standard MOT criteria.
