RAC's Touran used guide found the only consistent pattern in owner complaints was electrical, mainly affecting older cars, and advises thoroughly testing all such controls before buying. Auto Express's (2011-2015) review sets that in context: it says the Touran uses tried-and-tested Golf running gear with most teething troubles ironed out, but reports that owners in its Driver Power survey admired the Touran's practicality and little else, with Volkswagen finishing 19th of 33 manufacturers and its dealers criticised for high prices. Expect switch, socket and module gremlins rather than engine failures, and expect dealer labour to cost more than the repair is worth.

Wikipedia's Touran engine data records 2.0 TDI DPF variants from 2005-2010 (BMM) and 2010-2015 (CBAB), and notes the 1.9 TDI was the exception to Euro 4 compliance when paired with the DSG gearbox. RAC's 2003-2010 guide tells buyers to inspect the load area for damage and the rear seats, to look for cars used as ex-airport taxis or fleet motorway floggers, to check front tyre wear patterns and to scrutinise odometer readings. For a 15-to-20-year-old seven-seater, the combination of a town-driven diesel and a hard-used interior is the real risk, not the chassis.
