2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.7L Diesel · FL03 AYX

The 2003 Vauxhall Astra currently holds no valid MOT certificate, representing a significant legal and mechanical risk for any prospective buyer. The most recent test on 17 July 2023 at 223,923 miles resulted in a failure, yet the DVSA record lists no defects recorded. This anomaly typically indicates an aborted test, an unsafe condition preventing inspection such as a severe fluid leak or structural collapse, or an administrative error. The maintenance trend is impossible to assess mechanically due to the absence of recorded faults, but the failure status itself signals a worsening compliance position. Mileage accumulation has slowed notably over the last two recorded years. Between the July 2021 pass at 216,427 miles and the July 2022 test at 220,617 miles, the car covered roughly 4,190 miles. The subsequent year saw a drop to approximately 3,232 miles before the July 2023 failure at 223,923 miles. This reduced annual mileage suggests lighter use or prolonged periods of standing, which can cause its own issues like seized brakes, perished rubber suspension bushes, and degraded tyres. Given the 23-year age and the 223,923-mile reading, a thorough physical inspection is essential. The lack of recorded mechanical advisories does not guarantee sound condition; it may simply reflect an aborted test. A buyer must scrutinise the structural integrity of the sills, subframes, and floor pan for corrosion, a common failure point on older Astras. Suspension components, including coil springs and trailing arm bushes, require close examination for fractures and deterioration. Brake calipers and discs should be checked for binding and corrosion, particularly if the vehicle has stood idle since the 2023 failure. The exhaust system and fuel lines also demand inspection for rust perforation and leaks, which could explain the abrupt failure three years ago.
