This 2005 Volvo S40 passed its most recent MOT in September 2025 at 250,615 miles, but the inspection revealed a pattern of corrosion and wear that has been building over the past three years. The vehicle is now 21 years old with roughly average mileage for its age, so some deterioration is expected, but the nature and persistence of the defects suggest accelerated wear or exposure to harsh conditions. The most serious concern is the suspension. Both rear coil springs have been corroded since at least September 2024, and they were flagged again in the latest test. The nearside front suspension arm ball joint showed slight play in 2023, then progressed to excessive wear by September 2024, and although it passed the 2025 test, this signals a sustained weakness in the front-end geometry and steering response. Combined with the history of severely deteriorated CV boots on both front drive shafts recorded in 2022, it is clear that the front-end components have not been properly maintained or replaced. Corrosion of the rear sub-frame, noted in the most recent MOT, adds to the structural concerns. While the test report states it is not yet seriously weakened, rear sub-frame corrosion is progressive and can eventually affect load-bearing capacity and safety, particularly in crash events. The headlamps have also shown contamination, which may indicate poor sealing or exposure to moisture over time. The trend is not improving.
