- Front cross-member and boot floor corrosionSerious
The Marina's corrosion sits in places a quick walk-around cannot see. The front cross-member rusts from the inside out where the torsion-bar mounts collect water, the boot floor rots upwards from the spare-wheel well, and the rear axle trumpets corrode under the U-bolts where mud and grit are trapped. The usual suspects come with them — sills, rear arches, floor pans, suspension turrets, door bottoms and windscreen surrounds — and estates add inner-arch rot driven by leaking tailgate seals while coupés leak at the rear screen onto the boot floor. With tax and MOT exemption applying to every Marina now over forty, none of this gets looked at annually, so the inspection is yours to pay for.
- Lever-arm dampers, kingpins and sagging torsion barsModerate
The Marina kept the Minor's front suspension philosophy — kingpins, trunnions and lever-arm dampers — on a heavier car, and the club documents how badly it ages. The lever-arm dampers leak; they were fitted front throughout production up to 1982, with Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3-specific variants, so the correct unit matters. Swivel pins and kingpins seize and wear if not greased every 3,000 miles or three months, and replacing kingpins means removing the front upright. The tie-rod bushes wear, the top ball joint tension-pad spring rumbles, wheel bearings use TR7 parts, and the torsion-bar ride height drops until the front wings foul the tyres under heavy braking — a reset job for a specialist. Uprated trunnions are available through the club.
- Gearbox synchro and linkage wearModerate
The Marina's four-speed is shared with the Triumph Spitfire 1500 and the Marina Owners Club is blunt about its lifespan: gearboxes generally last only around 60,000 miles. First gear is hard to select, the linkage wears out, reverse idler teeth wear and the synchros go — with second usually the first to protest. The good news is that the box is a known item with club support and the car is cheap enough that a rebuild can be worthwhile; the bad news is that the work means removing the gearbox from under the car, which is where the labour sits, so a crunching clutch area on a test drive should be treated as a real quote and not as character.
