1971 Lotus Elan Sprint 1.6L Petrol · HHR 765K

The Lotus Elan Sprint presents a stable and reassuring roadworthiness profile. The most recent MOT, conducted on 20 June 2023 at 59,249 miles, passed with zero defects recorded. This clean sheet is not an isolated event. The vehicle has passed every single test in the provided five-year history without a single advisory or failure, indicating a consistent and improving maintenance trend under the current ownership. The mileage pattern tells a story of careful, low-mileage use. Between the March 2021 test at 56,144 miles and the June 2023 test at 59,249 miles, the car covered just 3,105 miles across a two-year and three-month interval. A notable gap exists between November 2017 at 55,626 miles and March 2020 at 56,006 miles, a period of over two years where only 380 miles were recorded. This suggests the vehicle may have been stored or lightly used during that time, which is typical for a classic car of this age. Despite the clean MOT history, a buyer must conduct a thorough in-person inspection focused on structural integrity. The fibreglass body of a Lotus Elan can disguise serious corrosion to the steel backbone chassis and suspension mounting points. A specialist inspection should specifically probe the chassis rails, outriggers, and jacking points for rust or previous accident damage, as these structural defects can develop without triggering a standard MOT failure if they progress slowly. Mechanically, the lack of advisories on brake components, suspension bushes, or exhaust emissions across multiple tests suggests diligent upkeep. However, a car covering barely 1,077 miles per year is prone to specific issues from standing. A buyer should inspect the tyre sidewalls for age-related cracking, check for binding calipers or corroded brake discs from lack of use, and verify the condition of perished rubber bushes and seals that deteriorate with time rather than mileage.
