2004 BMW 116 1.6L Petrol · HW54 FOD

The most recent MOT history for this 2004 BMW 116 shows a stable but concerning trend, with the vehicle failing a test just one week before passing at 119,043 miles in November 2023. Despite no recorded defects on either occasion, the near-consecutive test dates—particularly the October 2023 failure—suggest either a rushed or overlooked inspection, or that the tester may have missed subtle issues. The lack of advisories or defects across all four tests implies no major recurring failures, but the proximity of the October and November 2023 tests raises questions about whether critical components were overlooked or if the vehicle was driven unsafely between tests. The mileage pattern for this vehicle is unusually low for its age, averaging just 5,411 miles per year over its recorded history. Between November 2021 and October 2022, the car accumulated only 13,250 miles, and another 17,273 miles between October 2022 and November 2023—a pace that suggests prolonged periods of inactivity rather than consistent use. While low mileage generally indicates less wear on high-stress components like suspension bushes, coil springs, or brake calipers, it also implies potential neglect in areas like fluid changes, corrosion prevention, or even basic maintenance checks that could have been deferred due to limited driving. Given the sparse MOT record, a buyer should prioritise an independent inspection of the suspension system, particularly the rear axle where binding calipers or worn bushes could go undetected without a thorough mechanical assessment. The brakes, despite no recorded failures, warrant scrutiny for uneven wear or corrosion on the discs and calipers, especially if the vehicle has stood for extended periods. Structural integrity should also be examined, focusing on the subframe, sills, and wheel arches for signs of corrosion or fatigue cracks, as these are common issues in older BMWs with low mileage but prolonged exposure to moisture. Finally, the exhaust system and emissions components should be checked for leaks or blockages, as these are often overlooked in vehicles with infrequent use.
