2005 Vauxhall Astra 1.6L Petrol · HY55 SHV

The Vauxhall Astra’s most recent MOT, conducted on 26 August 2025 at 47,952 miles, confirms it remains roadworthy with no defects recorded. Over the past three annual tests—all passing without fail—there is no evidence of recurring mechanical issues or worsening conditions. The single failure in August 2023 was unusual, as it was recorded alongside a passing test on the same day at identical mileage, suggesting either a rare administrative anomaly or a non-critical oversight. Since then, the vehicle has maintained a consistent pattern of compliance, though the lack of advisories or defects does not preclude hidden wear from its age. The recorded mileage of 47,952 miles over 21 years—approximately 2,283 miles annually—is unusually low for a vehicle of this vintage. The gap between the 2022 and 2023 tests (46,301 to 46,998 miles) represents just 697 miles in a year, while the 2023–2024 interval saw a slight increase to 762 miles. This suggests prolonged periods of inactivity rather than regular use, which could either mitigate some wear or lead to stagnant fluids, degraded seals, or corrosion from moisture accumulation. The absence of mileage spikes also means critical components like suspension bushes, coil springs, and brake calipers may not have endured the typical stress of higher-mileage vehicles, though this does not guarantee their current condition. Given the clean MOT history, a buyer should prioritise a thorough inspection of suspension integrity, particularly the rear suspension bushes and coil springs, as these components in a 2005 Astra are likely nearing their serviceable lifespan. The brakes, while not flagged in tests, should be checked for uneven wear or binding calipers, especially if the vehicle has been stationary for extended periods. Corrosion is another concern, particularly around wheel arches, sills, and the subframe, where rust can compromise structural integrity without immediate MOT failure. Finally, fluid levels—brake, power steering, and coolant—should be verified, as stagnation can lead to degraded performance or internal component damage. The lack of advisories in recent tests does not exclude these areas from requiring attention.
