The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) located in the Nitro's engine compartment serves as an integrated fuse box and microprocessor-controlled power distributor. Internal micro-relays soldered onto the multi-layered circuit board—particularly the fuel pump relay, horn relay, and windscreen wiper relay—suffer internal contact pitting or sticking. When the fuel pump relay fails closed, it continuously powers the tank fuel pump with the ignition off, draining the battery overnight. If it fails open, the engine cranks indefinitely without starting or cuts out suddenly while driving.

The 2.8-litre VM Motori common-rail turbodiesel engine suffers from heavy carbon and soot accumulation within the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, cooler, and inlet swirl passages, exacerbated by low-speed UK commuting. Sticky deposits cause the electronic EGR pintle to stick open, starving the cylinders of oxygen. Furthermore, oil vapor and soot contaminate the variable-nozzle turbine (VNT) electronic actuator linkage on the turbocharger, resulting in boost pressure deviation, black smoke, and engine management fault codes P0401 or P0234.

The Dodge Nitro uses an electronically selectable part-time four-wheel-drive transfer case (MP153 / NV144 system). The electric shift actuator motor mounted to the rear casing of the transfer box is exposed to UK road splash, winter grit, and moisture. Over time, road salt corrodes the electric connector harness and causes internal motor commutator seizure. When the shift motor fails, the driver cannot switch between 2WD and 4WD Lock, leaving the 4WD system disabled and illuminating the SERV 4WD warning indicator on the instrument panel.
