1991 Volkswagen Golf 1.6L Diesel · J283 EWV

The vehicle presents a stable roadworthiness status, though the maintenance history reveals a pattern of reactive rather than proactive upkeep. The latest test in April 2022 at 144,130 miles passed with no defects recorded, indicating that the mechanical issues identified previously were addressed. This follows a turbulent period in early 2021 where the car failed on a nearside front wheel bearing and a faulty wiper, both of which were rectified to achieve a clean pass shortly thereafter. The mileage profile is exceptionally low for a 35-year-old vehicle, averaging approximately 4,100 miles per year. There is a significant gap in usage between November 2009 and February 2013, where the car covered only 1,047 miles in three years. The vehicle has remained largely static between 2017 and 2022, covering a mere 441 miles over a five-year span. The 2013 tester explicitly noted the vehicle had been stood, which explains the perished tyres and minor corrosion noted despite the low mileage. A buyer must carefully inspect the structural integrity of the suspension mounting points, as the 2013 record flagged corrosion in both the front and rear areas. While this was not excessive at the time, these areas are prone to progressive decay on older chassis. The history shows recurring issues with lower suspension arms and MacPherson strut bearings, suggesting that the rubber components and bearings suffer from age and dryness rather than heavy use. The brake system also warrants scrutiny, given past failures related to parking brake efficiency and pitted discs. Given the long periods of stationary time, a physical inspection should focus on fluid degradation, perished rubber hoses, and seized mechanical components. The 2014 failure regarding a damp rear brake valve and leaking shock absorber suggests that the hydraulic system may suffer from slow leaks. Ensure the offside front brake hose remains free of restricted movement, as the tester previously flagged it for fouling. The current lack of recent data since 2022 means the vehicle is now overdue for an MOT.
