1991 Vauxhall Astra 1.8L Petrol · J544 AAB

A profound absence of MOT data since March 2008 is the defining characteristic of this vehicle, as its roadworthiness has not been officially verified for eighteen years. While the last recorded test resulted in a pass, the history prior to that includes a failure in September 2006 involving structural corrosion and fuel system insecurity, indicating a trend of instability before the vehicle disappeared from the testing record. The recorded 52,327 miles represents an unusually low annual average of approximately 1,495 miles over its thirty-five-year lifespan. This usage pattern, combined with the nearly two-decade gap in testing, indicates that the vehicle has likely undergone long periods of standing. Such prolonged inactivity typically results in the degradation of rubber components and the seizing of mechanical linkages, which may offset the benefits of the low odometer reading. The 2006 failure record highlights specific areas of concern, namely structural corrosion at the seat belt anchorage and an insecure fuel system component. A detailed physical inspection of the chassis and floor pan is necessary to determine if the previously noted corrosion has progressed. The fuel delivery system should also be examined for leaks or perished lines to ensure the insecurity flagged in the earlier record has been permanently rectified. During a test drive, listen for rhythmic clicking or popping noises from the front wheels during tight turns, which would indicate failure of the constant velocity joints or perished gaiters. The driver should also check for steering pull or pedal judder, as the extended period of inactivity can lead to binding brake calipers or the deterioration of suspension bushes.
