2005 Toyota RAV4 2.0L Petrol · J 9921

The 2005 Toyota RAV4 shows a stable roadworthiness trend over the past three MOT cycles, with the most recent test on 2024-08-19 confirming no defects and a clean pass. This consistency suggests the vehicle has avoided major mechanical or structural failures, though the single failure in August 2023—despite no recorded defects—raises curiosity about what was actually tested. The 2023 failure date is unusually close to the preceding pass (just one day earlier), which may indicate a clerical error or a minor oversight in the test process. No advisories or recurring issues appear in the record, but the absence of defects does not guarantee hidden wear, particularly on components like suspension bushes or coil springs, which are prone to gradual degradation over 21 years. The recorded mileage of 56,966 miles at 21 years old equates to approximately 2,713 miles per year, a figure significantly lower than average for this vehicle’s age. This suggests either very light usage or prolonged periods of inactivity, which could mitigate some wear but also introduce risks such as flat battery conditions, seized suspension joints, or degraded fuel system components. The most notable gap in the record is between the 2021 and 2022 tests, spanning 13 months—longer than the standard 12-month MOT interval—yet no defects were recorded. This could imply either consistent maintenance or a vehicle that has not yet reached critical thresholds for common failures. Given the lack of defects in the MOT history, a buyer should prioritise an independent inspection of high-wear areas that are not routinely tested. Focus on the suspension, particularly the rear bushes and coil springs, as these are often overlooked in MOTs but critical for handling and safety. The brakes, while not flagged, should be checked for uneven wear or binding calipers, especially if the vehicle has spent extended periods stationary. Examine the underbody for corrosion around the sills, wheel arches, and exhaust system, as this is a common failure point for vehicles of this age. Finally, verify the condition of the timing belt (if applicable) and fluid levels, as these are not MOT-tested but can lead to catastrophic failure if neglected. The clean MOT record is reassuring, but the vehicle’s age demands thorough scrutiny beyond the test’s scope.
