2003 Fiat Ducato 2.0L Diesel · KJ03 ACZ

The most recent MOT test on the 2003 Fiat Ducato was conducted on 2025-12-15, resulting in a passing grade, though it did include two advisories related to the nearside and offside rear tyres showing signs of slight damage, cracking, or perishing. The overall maintenance trend over the past few years is relatively stable, with only minor issues recorded in the last two tests, and no failures beyond the windscreen-related issues from 2023. The earlier failure in 2020 concerning the nearside stop lamp highlights a brief period of recurring minor electrical or wiring concerns, but these have since been resolved, indicating a return to consistent roadworthiness. The absence of repeated failures beyond these isolated incidents suggests that while the vehicle has faced some common age-related wear issues, it has generally maintained a stable operational status. The recorded mileage of 45,539 miles for a vehicle aged approximately 23 years represents an annual usage rate of around 1,980 miles, which is notably lower than would be expected for a commercial or high-mileage vehicle of this vintage. Such low mileage can stem from infrequent use, long periods of stationary storage, or a vehicle used primarily for light personal transport rather than heavy-duty operations. However, the extended periods without significant mileage accumulation may also contribute to other forms of wear, such as standing corrosion on components like the brake discs, suspension linkages, or exhaust system, where moisture and lack of movement can accelerate degradation. Additionally, fluids like the brake fluid and coolant may degrade over time due to stagnation, potentially leading to reduced effectiveness or premature failure if not addressed. Given the advisories on the rear tyres showing slight cracking or perishing, the prospective buyer should conduct a thorough visual inspection of the tyre sidewall for signs of dry rot, which can compromise structural integrity and lead to sudden blowouts. During a test drive, listen for any unusual noises from the tyres, such as a grinding or scraping sound that could indicate uneven wear or internal damage. The buyer should also check the tyre pressure and tread depth, ensuring they meet legal requirements and that there are no visible signs of bulges or cracks that could signal underlying issues. For the windscreen-related failures from 2023, which included ineffective wipers and insufficient washer liquid, the buyer should replace the windscreen wipers with modern, high-performance models capable of clearing the windscreen effectively, especially in adverse weather conditions. Additionally, ensure the windscreen washer system is refilled with a suitable fluid and that the reservoir is fully operational. In terms of broader maintenance checks, the buyer should verify the battery’s health, given the vehicle’s age and low usage profile, as a 12V battery in prolonged disuse can suffer from sulfation or corrosion, leading to poor starting performance or complete failure. Inspect the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure they are clean and securely fastened. The brake system should be examined for signs of corrosion or binding, particularly on the rear discs and calipers, which may have been affected by prolonged standing. Listen for any grinding noises during braking, which could indicate worn brake pads or metal-on-metal contact, and check for uneven wear on the brake discs. Fluid checks are critical; the brake fluid should be replaced every two years or as recommended by the manufacturer, as standing fluid can absorb moisture and reduce braking performance. Similarly, the coolant should be flushed and renewed to prevent overheating and corrosion within the cooling system. Finally, a thorough inspection of the suspension components, including bushes, springs, and struts, is advisable, as these can degrade over time, leading to a rough ride or alignment issues. Any visible signs of wear, such as cracks in the suspension bushes or excessive play in the struts, should be addressed promptly to maintain ride comfort and safety.
