2008 Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0L Petrol · LC58 XZO

Recurring suspension wear and persistent oil leaks define the mechanical profile of this Volkswagen Scirocco, with the most recent MOT passed on 20 March 2024. The vehicle's history shows a consistent pattern of degradation in the chassis and suspension components, specifically regarding bushes and ball joints, which has transitioned from minor advisories in 2019 to major failures in 2021 and 2023. While the 2024 test indicates a pass, the presence of advisories for a corroded rear coil spring, worn rear suspension arm bushes, and worn rear subframe bushes suggests that the underlying suspension issues are ongoing rather than resolved. The recorded mileage of 134,157 miles over approximately 18 years equates to an average annual usage of roughly 7,453 miles. This represents a relatively low annual accumulation for a vehicle of this age, which typically suggests more intermittent use rather than high-speed motorway mileage. Mechanically, this usage pattern can sometimes lead to more frequent attention being required for rubber components such as suspension bushes and seals, which can perish or crack due to age and environmental exposure even when not subjected to heavy mechanical load. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the chassis and underbody during a physical inspection, specifically focusing on the rear subframe and coil springs. The 2024 advisory regarding rear subframe and suspension arm bush wear, combined with the previous 2023 failure for front anti-roll bar linkages and suspension arm ball joints, indicates a cumulative wear pattern across the entire suspension system. On a test drive, listen for rhythmic knocking or clunking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces or speed bumps, and feel for any wandering or instability in the steering, which could indicate that the worn bushes or ball joints are impacting directional control. The persistent mention of oil leaks in almost every MOT since 2020, including the most recent 2024 advisory, necessitates a thorough check of the engine bay and undercarriage. Although recorded as not excessive, the presence of a front oil leak and the 2023 advisory regarding a misting nearside rear shock absorber suggest multiple areas of fluid loss. During a test drive, monitor for any changes in engine performance or noticeable smells of burning oil. Additionally, given the 2022 advisories regarding thin brake pads and worn tyres, ensure that the current braking performance is crisp without pedal judder and that the tyre tread and edges show no signs of uneven wear that would suggest alignment issues stemming from the documented suspension defects.
