Known faults for Abarth Abarth 500e (Electric)
Our database tracks 3 specific mechanical faults and recurring failure patterns identified across UK MOT testing stations for this generation.
MOT Roadworthiness: Excellent
This rating reflects historical MOT pass rates and recurring advisory wear patterns from official DVSA test logs. Note that roadworthiness does not verify outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, or stolen records.
Verify lender finance agreements, insurance write-offs, police stolen registers, and mileage rollback.
Common Problems: ABARTH 500E
Known issues reported by owners and MOT testers.
- External Sound Generator Corrosion and Speaker Malfunction(Moderate)
The Abarth 500e features an external waterproof acoustic speaker mounted low down beneath the rear bumper to reproduce a simulated Record Monza exhaust note. In UK driving conditions, the unit is directly exposed to high-pressure road spray, grit, and corrosive winter salt. Water ingress past the speaker seals and physical stone impact cause the speaker cone and driver electronics to degrade, producing harsh buzzing, crackling, or complete audio failure. Furthermore, software bugs in early firmware can cause the system to lock in an active state or trigger dashboard acoustic fault warnings.
- 12V Auxiliary Battery Drain and High-Voltage System Lockout(Serious)
The 500e relies on a conventional 12-volt lead-acid auxiliary battery to energise the vehicle body computers, telematics gateway, and the main DC-DC contactors that wake the 42kWh traction battery. Continuous background telemetry polling via Uconnect connected services and keyless entry proximity receivers can draw down the 12V battery if the car remains stationary for several days. When 12V voltage drops below critical threshold, the car becomes completely unresponsive, electric door buttons will not open, and the high-voltage contactors remain open, preventing the car from entering READY mode.
- Onboard Charger AC Charging Communication Failure(Serious)
The high-voltage onboard charger (OBC) converts domestic single-phase (7.4kW) and three-phase (11kW) AC electricity to DC for battery charging. Internal component faults within the OBC power electronics or micro-switch communication failures in the motorized charging port locking pin can prevent the vehicle from completing the digital charging handshake. When this occurs, the charging socket illuminates solid or flashing red, aborting home charging sessions, while public DC rapid charging via the lower CCS pins remains unaffected as it bypasses the internal AC converter.
