2012 Renault Megane 2.0L Petrol · LR12 WEX

The most recent DVSA MOT test, conducted on 30 March 2026, resulted in a pass with a single advisory notice concerning the nearside front tyre, which was recorded as worn close to the legal limit and worn on its edge. Reviewing the broader test history from 2020 through 2025, the vehicle has passed every annual examination without any recorded failures or dangerous defects, indicating a generally stable maintenance profile. However, the recurrence of tyre-related advisories across multiple tests, specifically in 2022 and 2026 for front wheel edge wear, and in 2024 for cracking and perishing across multiple tyres, suggests a pattern of premature or uneven tyre deterioration that warrants closer inspection before purchase. With 58,370 miles recorded on a 2012 Renault Megane, the annual mileage equates to approximately 4,169 miles, which is notably low for a vehicle of this age. This level of usage typically indicates either light private use or extended periods of standing between drives. Such low annual mileage can reduce wear on high-mileage components such as the engine internals and drivetrain, but it conversely accelerates degradation of items affected by age and inactivity. Brake discs and calipers are particularly susceptible to corrosion and binding when a vehicle remains stationary for prolonged intervals, while tyres, coolant, brake fluid, and the 12V battery all deteriorate on a calendar basis regardless of how few miles are covered. For a prospective buyer, a careful physical inspection should be prioritised over relying on the low mileage as reassurance. The tyres should be examined closely for sidewall cracking, perishing, and uneven shoulder wear, as the advisories over the years suggest these have been ongoing concerns. A test drive should include firm brake applications from higher speeds to check for any shudder, vibration, or pulling to one side, which would indicate corroded or warped brake discs, while also listening for clunks or grinding that could reveal seized caliper slide pins. The underside of the vehicle, particularly the suspension arms, coil springs, and exhaust system, should be inspected for surface corrosion consistent with a fourteen-year-old car that has seen winter road use. Beyond the visible wear items, several age-related service items merit verification. The brake fluid should have been renewed at least every two years regardless of mileage, and the coolant similarly requires periodic replacement to maintain corrosion inhibitor effectiveness, so evidence of recent fluid changes in the service history should be sought. The 12V battery in a low-mileage vehicle is frequently weakened by repeated short trips and standing periods, and its resting voltage and date code should be checked. Finally, suspension bushes, anti-roll bar links, and drop links commonly perish with age on this model, so the test drive should include driving over speed bumps and uneven surfaces while listening for knocks or clonks that would indicate deteriorated rubber components requiring replacement.
