2003 Volkswagen Transporter 2.5L Diesel · LS03 OOX

The most recent MOT, carried out on 6 March 2026, was passed with no recorded defects, confirming that the vehicle met the statutory safety and emissions requirements at that date. Over the past seven years the majority of tests have also been clean, with only occasional advisories and no failures, indicating a generally stable maintenance pattern rather than a deteriorating one. The presence of isolated advisories in 2024 suggests that while the core systems remain functional, some components are beginning to show age‑related wear that should be monitored. At 126,382 miles on a 2003 Transporter the annualised mileage works out at roughly 5,500 mi per year, which is well below the typical usage for a vehicle of this age. Such low utilisation often points to periods of limited running or extended storage, which can be as detrimental as high mileage because components may suffer from corrosion, fluid degradation and rubber hardening when the vehicle sits for long stretches. The modest mileage does mean that high‑wear items such as the clutch, gearbox and engine internals are likely to be in better condition than on a similarly aged, high‑mileage example, but the age of the chassis and ancillary parts must still be taken into account. The 2024 advisory list highlights three areas that merit close inspection before purchase. The rear exhaust leak, although classified as minor, can allow hot gases to escape near the rear bodywork and may cause a faint sulphur smell, increased cabin noise or, in extreme cases, heat damage to surrounding components; a visual inspection for cracked or corroded pipe sections and a brief engine run‑up should reveal any audible hissing. The off‑side rear brake pipe showing corrosion and grease contamination suggests possible weakening of the pipe wall and the risk of a sudden loss of pressure; look for signs of rust, moisture ingress or uneven brake pedal feel, and consider having the pipe pressure‑tested or replaced. The slight play reported on both near‑side and off‑side track‑rod end ball joints indicates early wear of the steering linkage; listen for clunking or knocking when turning the wheel at low speed, check for uneven tyre wear, and verify that the joints are properly greased and have no excessive movement before the next service. Given the vehicle’s age, even with its low mileage, a thorough age‑related inspection is essential. Examine the tyre sidewalls for cracking, dry rot or hardening, as rubber can deteriorate over time regardless of tread depth; replace any tyres older than six years. Test the 12 V battery’s cranking voltage and check for signs of sulphation, especially if the vehicle has spent long periods idle. Inspect the brake discs for surface rust, scoring or glazing, and ensure the calipers move freely without binding, as standing can cause piston seizure. Verify that all engine and transmission fluids have been changed within the recommended calendar intervals, looking for discolouration or moisture contamination, and confirm that the service book contains regular oil changes and any major service stamps. Finally, assess the under‑body for rust, particularly around wheel arches, sills and the chassis rails, as prolonged storage can accelerate corrosion that may affect structural integrity.
