2012 Smart Fortwo Passion MHD Auto 1.0L Petrol · LS62 OTW

The most recent MOT test conducted on 22 August 2026 resulted in a pass, maintaining a remarkably stable maintenance trend. The vehicle has an exemplary record with no recorded defects or advisories for seven consecutive years, suggesting a high standard of consistent care. The single current advisory regarding the nearside rear tyre being worn close to the legal limit on the edge is a routine wear-and-tear item and does not indicate any underlying mechanical instability or systemic failure. With a recorded mileage of 62,528 miles over 14 years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 4,466 miles per year. This is considered low for its age and suggests the car has been used primarily for short-distance urban commuting or has experienced periods of prolonged inactivity. While this results in less mechanical wear on the drivetrain and engine internals, low-mileage vehicles are often susceptible to degradation caused by time and environment rather than operational use. Given the clean MOT history and low annual mileage, the buyer should focus on age-related deterioration. It is essential to inspect the tyre sidewalls for perishing or hairline cracking, as rubber degrades over time regardless of tread depth. During the test drive, pay close attention to the braking system; listen for grinding and feel for any shudder or pulling, which could indicate binding calipers or pitted brake discs resulting from standing. Additionally, check for any stiffness or clunking in the suspension, as rubber bushes and coil springs can harden or corrode over a fourteen-year period. Verification of the service history is critical to ensure that oil and other essential fluids have been replaced according to calendar intervals rather than mileage alone, as stagnant fluids can degrade and lead to internal engine sludge. The health of the 12V battery should be tested, as infrequent usage often leads to premature battery failure. Finally, a thorough inspection of the underbody is advised to check for surface corrosion on the chassis and suspension mounting points to ensure the structural integrity of the vehicle remains intact.
