2013 Vauxhall Astra 1.6L Petrol · LX13 AEJ

A recurring theme across the MOT record is progressive front‑end wear – the off‑side front tyre repeatedly approaches the legal limit and the lower suspension arm ball joint and anti‑roll bar linkage ball joint are flagged for slight play at each test. Although these items have not yet escalated to a failure, the latest January 2026 pass still carries the same tyre and suspension advisories, indicating that the wear pattern is ongoing rather than resolved. At 129,204 mi for a 2013 model the average annual mileage sits just under 10,000 mi, which aligns with typical usage for a vehicle of this age. The MOT history shows regular annual testing from 2020 through 2024 and two tests in early 2026, with only a single year (2025) absent, suggesting a fairly consistent utilisation rather than prolonged periods of storage. This mileage level is sufficient to expect normal wear on consumables such as brake pads, discs and CV boots, which is reflected in the advisories recorded. When inspecting the car, pay particular attention to the front suspension. Probe the lower arm and anti‑roll bar ball joints for excess movement and listen for clunking noises over bumps, which would confirm the slight play noted in the MOTs. Examine the off‑side front tyre for tread depth, edge wear and any cupping that could indicate alignment or suspension issues. Verify that the front brake pads still have adequate material and that the discs are free of deep scoring; the 2024 advisory noted pitting that, while not immediately unsafe, may warrant resurfacing or replacement soon. Check the near‑side front CV boot for cracks or grease leakage, and inspect the engine bay for any oil seepage that was previously flagged as a minor leak. Finally, confirm that the off‑side front windscreen wiper and position lamp operate correctly, as these components failed the 2020 test. Assess the rear tyre condition, especially the near‑side rear tyre that was close to the legal limit in 2020, to determine whether replacement is imminent. Addressing the tyre wear, front suspension play, brake wear and CV boot condition before purchase will mitigate the most common mechanical risks highlighted by the MOT history.
