A persistent theme across the MOT history is the gradual wear of suspension joints and the chronic corrosion of the brake pipe network, punctuated by a few outright failures that have since been remedied. The most recent test in November 2021 was a pass, yet it still recorded a central oil leak and slight play in several rear suspension arm ball joints, the off‑side rear anti‑roll bar linkage, and the near‑side front wheel bearing. Earlier failures in 2012 (excessive play in an off‑side front lower ball joint) and 2013 (rough near‑side rear wheel bearing and an excessively corroded rear brake pipe) indicate that the vehicle has previously struggled to meet the minimum safety thresholds in these areas, although the record shows a shift to advisory‑only findings after those dates. At 139,026 mi spread over roughly 31 years the average annual accumulation is about 4,500 mi, which is low for a vehicle of this vintage. Such modest usage can mean reduced cumulative wear on drivetrain and engine components, but it also raises the possibility of prolonged periods of inactivity. Extended idle time can accelerate rubber degradation, promote oil seepage, and allow moisture to settle in corrosion‑prone areas such as brake pipes and chassis mounting points, all of which are reflected in the recurring advisories. When inspecting the suspension, listen for clunking or knocking over bumps and feel for any looseness when applying steering input or lifting the rear wheels; excessive play in the rear ball joints or anti‑roll bar linkage will manifest as a vague wobble or uneven tyre wear. The near‑side front wheel bearing, still flagged for slight play, should be evaluated for a humming or grinding noise that changes with vehicle speed and load. Given the history of brake pipe corrosion, a visual check for rust on the pipe surfaces and a functional test for any brake pedal pulsation or sponginess are essential, and any sign of fluid leakage around the pipe fittings must be addressed promptly. The central oil leak noted in 2021 warrants a close examination of the engine’s oil seals and gaskets, looking for drips on the sump or under the vehicle after a short drive. Corrosion advisories on the front chassis sections and seat‑belt anchorage areas suggest that the structural integrity around mounting points may be compromised; inspect these zones for flaking paint, rust pits, or weakened metal that could affect mounting of suspension components or safety belts. Finally, the minor exhaust leak recorded in 2014 should be verified by a brief engine run, checking for audible hissing or visible smoke at the centre and rear exhaust sections, as any leak could affect emissions compliance and introduce exhaust fumes into the cabin. A thorough mechanical inspection focusing on these identified weak points will give a realistic picture of the vehicle’s current roadworthiness.
