- Takata front passenger airbag inflator - two overlapping campaignsSerious
X-Trails were part of Nissan's UK Takata programme: recall R/2013/050 covered passenger inflators whose propellant could let the inflator rupture and scatter metal, with X-Trail build dates from 2 July 2001 through to November 2012 in the various listings. Worse, campaign R/2018/100 then found that the replacement inflators fitted during earlier repairs were non-dessicated and had to be swapped again. Any used T30 today could have an untreated or wrongly treated front passenger airbag, which is both a safety risk and an MOT and insurance problem.
- Suspension, damping and underbody damage from hard useModerate
The RAC's X-Trail used guide tells buyers to get underneath and check that over-enthusiastic off-roading has not wrecked the suspension, exhaust, front spoiler or wheelarch liners, and warns that many will have lived a harder life than the mileage suggests. CarPeep's 2025 MOT analysis for the X-Trail nameplate shows suspension as the single biggest failure area at 29.1% of failure items, with the pass rate for 11-year-old-and-over cars at 54.5% against a 72.3% average. On a 20-plus-year-old 4x4 that means shock absorbers, bushes, ball joints and corroded brake lines are the real cost, not the engine.
