2009 KIA RIO Chill Crdi 1.5L Heavy oil · NNZ 1255

Consistent roadworthiness is the primary characteristic of this Kia Rio, which has maintained an exceptionally clean MOT record over the last nine years. Since a brief failure in May 2021, the vehicle has successfully passed every subsequent annual inspection without a single recorded defect or advisory. This sequence of clean passes, culminating in the most recent successful test on 11 January 2024, suggests that the primary safety-critical components have remained within acceptable tolerances for the duration of the testing period. A total of 82,743 miles over seventeen years equates to an average annual accumulation of approximately 4,867 miles, which is significantly lower than the national average for a diesel-powered vehicle. While this limited usage suggests less mechanical fatigue on the drivetrain compared to higher-mileage examples, it also necessitates a careful inspection of components prone to degradation through inactivity. The gap between the 2017 and 2019 tests, as well as the period between 2022 and 2024, indicates that the vehicle has experienced extended intervals of low usage, which can lead to the seizure of moving parts or the deterioration of rubber seals and hoses that are not regularly exercised. During the test drive, pay particular attention to the suspension and steering geometry, as these components often develop play after long periods of standing. Listen closely for any knocking or clunking noises when traversing uneven surfaces or speed bumps, which would indicate worn anti-roll bar links, track rod ends, or wishbone bushes. Given the age of the vehicle and its low-mileage profile, check for any stiffness in the steering rack or uneven tyre wear that might point to alignment issues resulting from infrequent use or minor impacts while parked. The braking system, despite having no recorded defects, requires a practical assessment to ensure that the calipers are not binding. During deceleration, monitor the pedal feel for any pulsing or judder, which would indicate warped brake discs or uneven pad wear. Furthermore, verify that the handbrake holds firmly on an incline and releases without resistance. Since the vehicle is a diesel model, ensure that the engine idles smoothly and that there is no excessive smoke or hesitation under load, as the low annual mileage may have resulted in the accumulation of carbon deposits within the exhaust gas recirculation system or the diesel particulate filter.
