2002 Audi A2 1.4L Petrol · OV02 VJO

The vehicle passed its most recent MOT on 5 September 2025, but the overall maintenance trend suggests a gradual decline in the condition of the chassis and suspension components. While the car consistently passes, the emergence of corrosion-related advisories and recurring suspension wear indicates that the vehicle is entering a phase of significant age-related degradation. The shift from simple wear-and-tear items like bulbs and brake pads to structural concerns such as corroded brake pipes suggests that preventative maintenance may have been deferred in recent years. With a recorded mileage of 134,182 miles over twenty-four years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 5,591 miles per year. This is considerably lower than the national average for a car of this vintage, which often implies the vehicle has spent periods of time stationary or has been used for short, urban journeys. While lower mileage reduces drivetrain wear, it can exacerbate issues such as rubber perishing, fluid degradation, and the accumulation of moisture in the braking system, which likely contributes to the corrosion noted in the MOT history. A primary area of concern is the braking system. The 2025 advisory regarding corroded rear brake pipes that have been covered in grease is a significant red flag, as this often indicates an attempt to mask oxidation or prevent further decay without actually replacing the lines. During a physical inspection, you must verify the integrity of all brake lines and check for any soft pedal feel or fluid leaks. Furthermore, the history of pitted and scored brake discs indicates a pattern of infrequent use or poor-quality consumables. Ensure the rear tyres are checked for uneven edge wear, as this may point to failing rear suspension bushes or incorrect wheel alignment. The suspension requires close scrutiny, specifically the nearside front shock absorber, which has been misting oil since 2023, and the history of heavily corroded coil springs. On a test drive, listen for clunks or knocks over uneven surfaces and observe if the car bounces excessively, which would confirm the shock absorbers are spent. Given the vehicle's age and low annual usage, you should also inspect the tyre sidewalls for age-related cracking, verify the health of the 12V battery, and confirm that the engine oil and coolant have been changed based on a calendar interval rather than just mileage. Review the service history to ensure the timing belt and water pump have been replaced according to the manufacturer's time-based schedule.
