2005 Honda CR-V 2.0L Petrol · OV55 VLD

The most recent MOT test on the 2005 Honda CR-V was conducted on 2026-03-10 and resulted in a passing grade, though it included several advisories and minor defects that warrant careful consideration. Over the past six years, the vehicle’s MOT history demonstrates a pattern of recurring issues, particularly in the suspension and lighting systems, with multiple failures linked to faulty lamps and corroded or worn suspension components. While the latest test did not result in a failure, the persistence of advisories—such as corroded coil springs, worn anti-roll bar bushes, and play in lower suspension ball joints—suggests ongoing wear that could escalate without proactive maintenance. The fact that the vehicle passed in March 2026 despite these advisories implies that the test criteria may have allowed for minor but persistent defects to pass, but the buyer should be aware that these conditions could lead to further deterioration if ignored. The vehicle’s recorded mileage of 141,154 miles over approximately 21 years represents an average annual usage of around 6,722 miles, which is consistent with its age and typical usage patterns for a Honda CR-V in the UK. This level of mileage is not excessively high for a car of this age, but it does indicate significant exposure to wear on critical systems such as the suspension, brakes, and drivetrain components. The absence of dramatic mileage spikes suggests that the vehicle has been driven under moderate to normal conditions, though the long periods between MOT tests—some spanning over a year—could mean that minor issues have been allowed to develop. The most critical implication is that high-mileage vehicles of this age are more prone to hidden wear in components like suspension bushes, seals, and corrosion-prone areas, particularly if the vehicle has been stored in damp conditions or driven in harsh environments. Given the recurring advisories and the vehicle’s age and mileage, the buyer should conduct a thorough pre-purchase inspection to address several key areas. First, inspect the suspension components for signs of further corrosion or excessive play in the anti-roll bar bushes, front and rear ball joints, and coil springs. During a test drive, listen for unusual clunking noises from the suspension, particularly when the vehicle is driven over bumps or at higher speeds, as this may indicate worn or binding components. Check for uneven tyre wear patterns, which could reveal misalignment or suspension issues, and verify that the tyres are within legal limits and free of cracks or dry rot. Additionally, examine the brake system for signs of corrosion on discs or binding calipers, which may lead to reduced braking performance or uneven wear. The offside stop lamp failure from the 2025 MOT failure indicates a persistent electrical issue, so test all lamps and indicators thoroughly, and check for any loose wiring or damaged connectors. For fluid systems, the advisories regarding oil leaks and potential fluid degradation from long-term storage should be addressed. Inspect the engine oil level and condition, and consider a full fluid top-up if necessary, as old oil can become thick and less effective at lubrication. Check the brake fluid reservoir for leaks and ensure the fluid is clear and free of contaminants, as standing brake fluid can absorb moisture and reduce braking efficiency. The vehicle’s battery should also be tested for health, particularly if it has been stored for extended periods, as corrosion or internal failure can lead to poor starting or electrical system failures. Finally, since the CR-V is approaching its 20-year mark, the buyer should verify that all service records are up to date, especially for items like timing belt replacement (if applicable), spark plugs, and timing belt-related components, as these can fail without warning. If the vehicle has been driven regularly, focus on checking tyre sidewall integrity for signs of cracking or perishing, which can compromise tyre safety over time.
