The latest MOT test on 12 June 2026 was passed with no defects recorded. Reviewing the historical data, the maintenance trend appears to be reactive, with various advisories appearing over the years regarding steering, suspension, and drivetrain components. While the most recent result is clean, the presence of previous advisories for a stiff steering headbearing and play in the lower suspension linkage suggests that these areas require ongoing monitoring to ensure they do not revert to a state of failure. The recorded mileage of 22,851 miles is exceptionally low for a 28-year-old vehicle, representing an average annual usage of approximately 816 miles. This suggests the vehicle has likely spent significant periods in storage or is used only very occasionally. While low mileage typically implies less wear on the engine and gearbox, it presents a different set of mechanical risks. Long periods of standing can lead to the degradation of components that are sensitive to time rather than distance, such as the oxidation of fluids and the perishing of rubber elements. When conducting a test ride, pay close attention to the steering and suspension response. Given the previous advisory for a notchy steering headbearing, listen for any binding or heavy sensations when turning the bars, which could indicate worn or dry bearings. You should also check for any clunking or irregular movement from the lower suspension linkage, especially when hitting bumps, and ensure the drive chain is properly tensioned and lubricated to prevent excessive slack. Additionally, verify that the rear braking performance is consistent and that the pads have not been allowed to wear down to the limit as previously noted. Due to the vehicle's age and low usage, a physical inspection must prioritise age-related deterioration. Examine the tyres thoroughly for sidewall cracking or perishing, as aged rubber can fail even if the tread depth remains high. Check the brake discs for heavy corrosion or evidence of binding calipers caused by standing. It is also vital to confirm that time-based maintenance has been performed, specifically the replacement of brake fluid, coolant, and engine oil, as these fluids lose their protective properties over time. Finally, inspect the battery and fuel system for signs of neglect, such as sulphation or fuel degradation, which are common in vehicles that sit idle for extended periods.
