1997 Volvo 900 Series 2.3L Petrol · R870 AVG

A recurring theme of minor oil and exhaust leaks defines the mechanical picture of this 1997 Volvo 900 Series, with each of the last seven MOTs flagging an oil‑drip advisory and three tests noting a small exhaust leak. The steering rack front gaiter has also been recorded as deteriorated on two occasions, and a rear service brake binding advisory appeared in the latest 2026 test. Despite these repeated advisories, the vehicle has consistently passed its MOT, the most recent inspection on 4 March 2026 confirming that none of the issues have risen to a failure level. At 189,579 mi the car averages roughly 6,500 mi per year, a mileage rate that sits squarely within normal usage for a vehicle of this age. The MOT record shows annual testing with no significant gaps, indicating the odometer reading is likely reliable and that the car has not endured prolonged periods of inactivity. This moderate annual accumulation suggests consumable wear—tyres, brakes and suspension components—will be in line with typical wear patterns for a late‑1990s sedan, but the cumulative mileage still places the drivetrain and engine components well into the high‑wear zone. Prospective buyers should inspect the source of the oil leak by looking for fresh oil on the engine bay floor and checking common leak points such as valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing and the oil pan seal. A functional test for the exhaust leak involves listening for a faint ticking or hissing at idle and checking for soot or black deposits around the manifold and rear pipe. The front steering rack gaiter, while not yet causing dirt ingress, should be examined for any looseness or play in the rack; a noticeable wobble when turning the wheel at low speed could indicate impending wear. The rear brake binding advisory warrants a brake pedal test—any pulsation, increased pedal effort or a dragging sensation when the vehicle is stationary points to a sticking caliper or seized hose that will need attention. Tyre condition deserves close scrutiny: the record notes edge‑wear and low pressures, and the 2024 advisory flagged all tyres as “starting to get low”. Verify tread depth across the width of each tyre and look for uneven wear that could signal alignment or suspension issues, especially given the near‑side rear shock absorber oil misting noted in 2025. Finally, replace the inoperative rear‑lamp units and address the deteriorated registration plate to bring the lighting system back within legal standards. Budget for remedial work on the oil and exhaust leaks, steering rack gaiter, rear brake service and tyre refurbishment to ensure the car remains road‑worthy beyond the next MOT.
