1998 Volkswagen Motorhome 2.4L Diesel · R971 HCA

The vehicle most recently passed its MOT on 16 August 2025 with no defects recorded. Looking at the broader history, the maintenance trend is currently stable and improving, as the last three annual tests have been passed without any advisories or failures. This follows a more problematic period around 2021, where the vehicle required corrective work for a seized brake load sensing valve and a deteriorated constant velocity boot, suggesting that a period of necessary refurbishment has recently been completed. With a recorded mileage of 98,707 miles over 28 years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 3,525 miles per year. This is significantly lower than the national average for a vehicle of this age. While low mileage generally implies less wear on the engine internals and gearbox, it often indicates long periods of standing. For a motorhome, this usage profile increases the risk of perished rubber seals, seized braking components, and the degradation of fluids that break down over time regardless of distance travelled. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the history of oil leaks and steering rack play noted in previous years. During a test drive, listen for any knocking or clunking from the front suspension and steering assembly, and feel for any excessive play or vagueness in the steering wheel. Inspect the engine bay and underbody for signs of fresh oil seepage, as the recurring advisories suggest a propensity for leaks. Additionally, verify that the constant velocity boots are intact and not leaking grease, as a failure here can lead to rapid drivetrain wear. Given the low annual mileage and the previous advisory regarding perished tyre sidewalls, a thorough physical inspection of all tyres is essential. Check for fine cracking or hardening of the rubber, even if the tread depth remains legal, as aged tyres lose structural integrity. Inspect the brake discs for heavy surface corrosion or evidence of binding calipers, which is common in vehicles that remain stationary for long periods. Finally, review the service history to ensure that oils and filters have been changed based on time intervals rather than mileage, and test the 12V battery health to ensure it has not been depleted by prolonged inactivity.
