2011 Land Rover Discovery 3.0L Diesel · RO11 VTM

The most recent MOT test passed on 21 February 2023 with no defects recorded, following a clean pass in February 2022. This indicates a stable maintenance trend over the last several years, suggesting that the vehicle has been maintained to a standard that meets the minimum legal requirements for roadworthiness without immediate failures in safety-critical components. While a clean record is a positive indicator, the lack of recorded advisories means that minor wear on components like brake linings or suspension bushes may have been right at the threshold of the inspection limit, necessitating a more thorough physical inspection. With a recorded mileage of 177,562 miles, the vehicle has averaged approximately 11,837 miles per year, which is consistent with typical usage for a 15-year-old diesel SUV. This level of mileage suggests the vehicle has seen regular use, which is beneficial for preventing the seizure of components often seen in vehicles that sit idle. However, the high cumulative mileage implies significant wear on the drivetrain, suspension bushes, and various engine seals. You should be prepared for the potential degradation of high-wear items such as the turbocharger, fuel injectors, and the complex suspension systems common to this model. Since the MOT history shows no specific defects, your inspection should focus on age-related deterioration and high-mileage wear. Closely examine the tyres for sidewall perishing or cracking, which can occur due to age even if the tread is deep. Check the brake discs for excessive corrosion or uneven wear, and listen for any binding calipers or a shuddering sensation through the pedal during test drives. If the vehicle is equipped with air suspension, listen for unusual compressor noise or observe if the vehicle settles unevenly when parked, as this can indicate leaks in the air bags or a failing compressor. Furthermore, inspect the engine bay for any signs of oil or coolant weeping from gaskets, hoses, or the turbocharger assembly. Given the age, it is vital to verify the service history to confirm that time-sensitive maintenance, such as cambelt changes or fluid replacements for the differentials and transfer box, has been carried out. Check the condition of the 12V battery and the alternator's output, as electrical systems can become unreliable on older Land Rovers. Finally, perform a thorough check of the vehicle's underside for structural corrosion on the chassis and subframes to ensure long-term integrity.
