2007 Vauxhall Astra 1.9L Diesel · RY07 RFX

Recurring issues with braking components, tyre tread depth, and suspension wear define the mechanical profile of this Vauxhall Astra. The vehicle has a history of significant failures related to dangerous brake pad thickness and insufficient tyre tread, most recently evidenced by a failure in January 2026 and a subsequent pass on 5 February 2026. While the latest test shows a pass, the record reveals a persistent pattern of deteriorating consumables, including repeated advisories for worn brake discs and shock absorber bushes, alongside a continuing non-excessive oil leak that has been noted in every test since January 2025. The vehicle has covered 186,645 miles over its nineteen-year lifespan, averaging approximately 9,823 miles per year. This mileage accumulation is consistent with typical annual usage for a vehicle of this age. Mechanically, this level of use suggests that components subject to friction and fatigue, such as the braking system, suspension bushings, and wheel bearings, are reaching the end of their functional lifecycles, which is reflected in the frequent advisories and failures recorded over the last several years. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the braking system and steering components during a test drive. The history of major and dangerous failures regarding brake pads and discs, combined with the most recent advisory for a binding nearside rear wheel, necessitates a thorough check for pedal judder, uneven braking pull, or any audible scraping sounds. Furthermore, the recent report of damaged track rod end ball joint dust covers on both the nearside and offside front should be investigated; listen for any knocking or clunking noises when turning the steering wheel or driving over uneven surfaces, as this can indicate developing play in the steering linkage. Suspension and drivetrain integrity also require scrutiny based on the documented advisories. The repeated mentions of worn shock absorber bushes and play in the nearside rear wheel bearing suggest potential instability in the rear axle assembly. During a test drive, monitor the vehicle for excessive bouncing, swaying, or a rhythmic humming noise from the rear that increases with speed. Finally, while the oil leak has been described as non-excessive, the continuity of this advisory since early 2025 means the engine bay should be inspected for the specific source of the leak to determine if it is a minor seal issue or a more significant gasket failure.
