2012 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2L Petrol · SW12 ONN

The most recent DVSA MOT test on the Vauxhall Corsa was conducted on 2021-12-11, resulting in a passing outcome with a single minor advisory related to the offside front constant velocity (CV) drive shaft boot, which was deemed severely deteriorated. This follows a previous MOT failure in the same test session for the same defect, indicating a recurring issue that has not yet been resolved or addressed to the standard required for roadworthiness. The earlier clean MOT results from 2016 to 2019 suggest that the vehicle’s overall maintenance history was stable prior to 2020, but the persistence of the CV boot failure in 2021 highlights a critical mechanical concern that requires immediate attention. While the front windscreen washer fluid advisory was also present in 2021, it is a non-critical issue and unlikely to impact the vehicle’s roadworthiness significantly if rectified promptly. The recorded mileage of 75,294 miles for a 2012 Corsa represents an annual usage rate of approximately 5,378 miles, which is notably low for a vehicle of this age. Such low mileage can stem from infrequent use, long periods of stationary storage, or a more leisurely driving profile, but it also raises concerns about potential wear and tear from prolonged inactivity. Vehicles left unused for extended periods can suffer from issues such as corrosion in standing components, particularly in the brake system where discs and calipers may bind due to lack of movement, or fluid degradation in hydraulic systems. Additionally, tyres may develop sidewall cracking or perishing from exposure to environmental elements over time, even with minimal usage. The discrepancy between the vehicle’s age and mileage suggests that the owner may have prioritised longevity over regular driving, which could conceal underlying mechanical fatigue that would be more apparent under higher demand. For the prospective buyer, the most pressing concern is the repeated failure of the offside front CV joint boot, which is a critical component of the front-wheel drive system. The boot’s deterioration exposes the CV joint to contaminants, leading to accelerated wear of the internal bearings and potential failure of the joint itself. On a test drive, listen for a persistent clunking or rattling noise from the offside front wheel during acceleration, deceleration, or cornering, as these are indicative of a failing CV joint. Inspect the boot visually for tears, splits, or oil leakage around the joint, and check for uneven wear on the offside front tyres, which may suggest misalignment or a failing suspension component. The CV joint should be replaced as soon as possible, ideally before the joint itself fails, which could lead to catastrophic drivetrain damage. Additionally, address the front brake pads, which failed MOT in 2017 with a thickness below the legal minimum, indicating they should have been replaced by now. Inspect the brake discs for warping, scoring, or excessive glazing, and check for a spongy or pulsating brake pedal, which could signal warped discs or worn brake callipers. Beyond the mechanical issues, the vehicle’s low mileage profile necessitates a thorough inspection of components prone to standing corrosion or fluid degradation. Begin with the brake system, checking for binding calipers, corrosion on the brake discs, or a grinding noise when braking, which may indicate worn pads or a failing brake master cylinder. Inspect the suspension for signs of corrosion in the strut mounts, wishbones, or control arms, and listen for unusual clunks or rattles when driving over bumps, which could signal worn suspension bushes or broken springs. Verify the condition of the tyres, paying particular attention to the sidewall for cracks or bulges, as these can compromise tyre integrity and safety. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure the 12V battery has sufficient charge by testing its voltage—older batteries may struggle to hold a charge due to internal degradation, especially if the vehicle has been stationary for extended periods. Finally, consider the age of the vehicle’s fluids, including the engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid, as these can degrade over time even without regular use. Consult the service manual for recommended fluid change intervals based on the vehicle’s age, and prioritise replacing fluids that have not been serviced within the last 12 months.
