2008 Mazda 3 TS D 1.6L Heavy oil · TEZ 2118

A relatively sparse MOT history for this vehicle shows a period of instability in late 2021, characterized by a failure on 30 September followed by a clean pass on 12 October 2021. While the most recent recorded test outcome is a pass with no defects, the lack of subsequent testing data through to 2026 suggests a significant gap in official roadworthiness documentation. This absence of recent certification means the current mechanical state of the vehicle cannot be verified against the standard DVSA criteria, leaving the integrity of critical systems unconfirmed for several years. The vehicle has covered 106,400 miles over its 18-year lifespan, which equates to an average annual accumulation of approximately 5,911 miles. This represents a low-mileage usage profile for a diesel-engined vehicle of this age. Mechanically, such low annual mileage can imply less frequent wear on high-friction components like brake pads and tyres, but it also increases the risk of issues associated with infrequent use, such as seized calipers, perished rubber bushes, or carbon buildup within the diesel exhaust system and EGR valves. Given the lack of recent MOT data and the low annual mileage, a test drive must focus on components that degrade through inactivity or infrequent thermal cycling. Listen for any dull knocks or clunks when traversing uneven surfaces, which may indicate perished suspension bushes or worn shock absorbers. Check for any hesitation or heavy smoke from the exhaust during acceleration, which could point to issues within the diesel fuel system or emissions controls that often arise when vehicles are driven short distances or used infrequently. Furthermore, the absence of recent inspections necessitates a close physical examination of the underside for signs of progressive corrosion on the subframe and exhaust system. During the test drive, pay close attention to the brake pedal feel; any sponginess or pulsation could indicate internal corrosion in the brake lines or uneven disc wear. It is also essential to monitor the engine for any signs of oil misting or weeping around the gasket areas, as long periods of stationary use can sometimes lead to seal degradation.
