A scooter with eight MOT entries stretching back to 2013, but with only one recorded failure and a clean pass on the most recent test dated 7 August 2026, presents a generally favourable roadworthiness picture at face value. That single failure, however, is worth close scrutiny. On 15 May 2018 the vehicle failed on a rear shock absorber with inadequate damping effect and a rear brake lever with insufficient reserve travel, and the identical date a pass was issued later the same day, suggesting both items were rectified promptly on site. The shock absorber failure in particular is a flagged mechanical defect, not merely an advisory, and damping components on a low-mileage scooter of this age can deteriorate through age-related seal hardening as much as through use. The intervening tests between 2013 and 2017, along with the 2026 result, show no recorded defects, which leaves the most recent record free of advisories but does not erase the earlier shock absorber finding. The mileage profile is unusual and warrants careful interpretation. With 7,048 miles recorded across a 27 year lifespan, the annual accumulation averages roughly 261 miles per year, which is extremely low and points to either very sporadic use or extended periods of standing. The MOT gap between September 2013 and May 2016, and again between May 2018 and August 2026, suggests the vehicle may have been off the road or exempt from testing for portions of those intervals, particularly given that pre-2018 historic vehicles fall outside compulsory MOT requirements. Long standing periods on two-stroke scooters of this era commonly produce seized cables, carburettor jet blockages, hardened fork seals, perished fuel lines, and stale two-stroke oil residues within the gearbox, none of which MOT testing will necessarily detect but all of which present real-world reliability concerns. On a physical inspection, particular attention should be paid to the rear shock absorber fitted as a replacement after the 2018 failure. Stand behind the scooter and press down firmly on the tail; the rear should rebound once and settle without bouncing, oscillating, or making clonking noises indicative of a blown damper. Check for any oil misting or weeping around the shock body, and inspect the upper and lower mounting bushes for perishing. The rear brake lever, also flagged in 2018, should have at least a third to half of its travel remaining before the brake engages; excessive free play suggests worn brake shoes, a stretched actuating cable, or a glazed drum. The cable itself should be checked for fraying at the adjusters and for smooth operation without sticking, as cables on rarely used scooters commonly corrode internally. Further checks should reflect the broader effects of long-term low usage rather than mileage-driven wear. The twistgrip and throttle cable often stick after extended standing, so the engine should be allowed to idle and warmed up while observing whether the rpm settles consistently or hunts. The CVT variator and belt, rarely stressed on a 7,000 mile machine, can suffer from glazing or seizing of the roller weights; listen for a rising engine speed without corresponding forward acceleration on a test ride, which would indicate belt slip. Brake fluid, brake hoses, and the hydraulic or mechanical brake actuation should be examined for any deterioration, and the tyres, despite low wear, should be inspected for sidewall cracking from age, which is more likely than tread wear on a vehicle of this mileage and vintage. Finally, confirm the recent shock absorber replacement was carried out with a comparable quality unit, as budget aftermarket dampers on small scooters frequently fail within a few years and would not necessarily be flagged again until damping has visibly degraded.
