2021 BMW M340D Xdrive Mhev Auto 3.0L Electric diesel · VXZ 7055

With only a single MOT test on file from 19 July 2025, this M340d presents a notably short documented roadworthiness history, but that single examination resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects recorded. While this is encouraging and supports the view that the vehicle was in sound mechanical condition at the time of test, the absence of a longer MOT trail means there is very little historical data to draw upon for trend analysis. For a 2021 model, the car is not yet due its first MOT until three years after registration, which would place the inaugural test around 2024, so the record may genuinely be limited to this most recent pass rather than indicating missed tests. The recorded mileage of 40,961 miles over roughly five years equates to an average of around 8,192 miles annually, which sits comfortably within the typical usage band for a UK-registered vehicle of this age and class. There are no unusual gaps or sudden jumps in the mileage record to suggest extended periods off the road or erratic use patterns. For a diesel-hybrid performance saloon driven at this moderate rate, the mechanical implications are relatively favourable: the engine, drivetrain, and hybrid components have seen consistent but not excessive duty cycles, which tends to be kinder on seals, gaskets, and the mild-hybrid 48V system than either very low mileage with frequent short trips or sustained high-mileage motorway use. Given the limited MOT history, prospective buyers should place greater emphasis on a thorough independent pre-purchase inspection rather than relying solely on the DVSA record. The B57 diesel engine in the M340d is known for timing chain stretch and EGR/intake carbon build-up, so a compression test and borescope inspection of the intake manifold would be prudent. The test drive should include cold-start observation for any timing chain rattle, assessment of the ZF eight-speed automatic for smooth shifts and torque converter shudder, and careful listening for any prop-shaft or transfer box clonks from the xDrive system given the higher torque output of the diesel. Additionally, on cold mornings check for any warning lights relating to the 48V mild-hybrid system and ensure the engine start-stop function operates smoothly. On the road, pay particular attention to the suspension, as M340d variants often run adaptive M suspension which can develop knocking bush failures, particularly at the rear trailing arm and wishbone bushes. Listen for any clonks over speed humps or uneven surfaces and feel for imprecise steering response that might suggest worn front control arm bushings. The brakes should be tested for any binding under gentle rolling and for a firm, progressive pedal feel without judder under hard braking, as the front discs are known to warp on heavier diesel applications. Finally, inspect the underside carefully for any signs of oil seepage from the rear main seal, turbo oil lines, and the area around the DPF, as these are common leak points on higher-mileage B57 units, even where the MOT record itself shows no concerns.
