2002 Land Rover Freelander 1.8L Petrol · WA52 MVM

A pattern of recurring tyre degradation and brake component wear defines the mechanical profile of this vehicle, with the most recent MOT pass on 18 July 2022 noting advisories for perishing and cracking on both rear tyres. While the vehicle has maintained a passing status since 2014, the history shows a tendency for consumables to reach the limits of roadworthiness between tests, specifically regarding tyre tread depth and brake pad thickness. The presence of corrosion on the nearside rear brake pipes recorded in 2018 indicates that structural integrity of the braking system has been a point of concern in the past, though no subsequent failures were noted in that specific area. The recorded mileage of 55,129 miles over a 24-year period represents an unusually low annual average of approximately 2,297 miles. This usage pattern suggests the vehicle has spent significant periods stationary or has been used very sparingly for short trips. Mechanically, such low annual accumulation can lead to the age-related degradation of rubber components, as evidenced by the cracking and perishing of the tyres noted in the 2022 test. While there is less wear on drivetrain and engine components due to low mileage, the lack of regular, sustained use can exacerbate the deterioration of seals and rubber-based parts like suspension bushes and tyre sidewalls. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the condition of the tyres and the braking system during a physical inspection and test drive. Given the 2022 advisories regarding perishing tyres, check the sidewalls of all four tyres for any signs of cracking or bulging, which can occur even if tread depth remains sufficient. Regarding the braking system, the 2018 advisory for corroded brake pipes necessitates a careful check of the lines running to the rear wheels for any signs of surface rust or leakage. During a test drive, listen for any irregular noises from the rear suspension and feel for any sponginess in the brake pedal or pulling to one side, which could indicate issues with the calipers or the integrity of the hydraulic lines. The history of worn tyres and thin brake pads suggests that maintenance of consumables has been reactive rather than proactive. When inspecting the vehicle, check the remaining tread on all tyres and the thickness of the brake pads. If the vehicle has been sitting for long periods, it is also advisable to check for any signs of fluid leaks from the engine or gearbox that may have developed while stationary. Pay particular attention to the steering feel; any heavy steering or wandering at low speeds could indicate that the low-mileage usage has allowed rubber steering components to perish or harden over time.
